Summary[edit]

Description
English: British soldiers waiting to cross the River Scarpe, Arras, France. The bridge appears to be partly broken and they are crossing on planks across to the near bank. A flat-bottomed punt in the foreground may be being put in position to form part of a pontoon bridge.

The Scarpe is a river which starts to the north-west of Arras and flows south past the town. This photograph was probably taken during the Arras offensive of April 1917, when the Allies moved forward quickly into German territory.
