orned with trefoil-headed niches,the chamfer with a band of fifteenth century ornamenta-tion, and the bowl with quatrefoils possessing featheredcusps terminating in leaves and small animals probablyintended for hares. It is possible that these little creaturesform the rebus of the name of the fifteenth century donorof this font.2 The incongruous moulded support now doing duty asthe stem for the Fairford font (Plate VIII) is of late date ;but within the last few months the Rev. Canon Joneshas found the original fifteenth century pedestal andbase in his vicarage garden and he hopes it may berestored to the church at an early date, so that the ancientbowl and pillar may be once again united. It nowbehoves the inhabitants of Lechlade to see if their beauti-ful pedestal may not also be discovered in some gardenor hidden away in an overgrown rockery, tor the present 1 The plain oak cover is dated 1668. 2 The feet of the effigy of Bishop Harewell (1386) in Wells Cathedral restupon two hares.
