It was a draft of theconstitution that Alexander was prepared voluntarily to be-stow upon his people. But all this did not stay the hand thatheld the bomb. The portion of the carriage just beneath theseat was shivered into wooden shreds, the Tsar alighted, a 24 ST. PETERSBURG second bomb was thrown — it shattered his legs and he wascarried dying to the Palace, stretched on the humble sledgeof a passer-by. That sledge and the fatal carriage are nowkept side by side in the museum of state-coaches. They arein the farthest room ; but when I asked to photograph them,the guardian, until then complaisant, turned pale and whis-pered, as he drew his hand across his endangered neck,

The carriagseverely plain, not unlike thone that we saw in an exer-cise parade of court vehi-cles in the Great Streetof the Stables whichleads from the museumto the Nevsky. The parade is led b\a fine troika, the three-horse open trap socharacteristic of Russia,and at the same time soseldom seen in Russianstreets to-day. The troikain full career is admirable.The middle horse, checked highto the arching hame, travels at aswift trot ; the outside horses, checkedpainfully low, with necks bent outward at an aching angleare meantime running like thoroughbreds on the home-stretch,apparently much faster than their trotting fellow.
