But on the 10th of Sept.,1541, two hours after sunset, a mass of water sud-denly issued from the crater of the nearest volcano,and rushing down the slope of the mountain withgreat velocity, immediately swept away the greaterpart of the town. This inundation was accompaniedby the shock of an earthquake. During the nightthe disasters caused by the rapid waters are describedas having been terrible. The torrents, with whichwere mingled masses of detached rocks and thetrunks of uprooted trees, carried away everythingbefore them.
