Towards mid-day, when the heat was approachingits worst, there was nothing for it but to retire to ourinner room, shut the door and lie quite still in semi-darkness, divested of every article of dress we couldspare. Of course there was absolutely not a breath ofair, our chief object being to prevent any circulationwhen the outer temjDerature was several degrees higherthan that of the room. The entrance-door led into alont^ somewhat narrow passage, which ran right acrossthe side of the house to a small open court beyond,which could be used as a stable for umles and horses.Half way along the passage a door opened into anotheipassage running at right angles, and leading into ahandsome court, at least fifty feet square. One sideof this square was arched to form a verandah, whichshaded an inner room, undecorated, and without win-dows or other means of ventilation than the doorway. On the right side from the passage was a secondlarge windowless room, the door being simply shadedby projecting eaves.
