March is Women’s History Month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites. Name: Heidi Newsome Title: Supervisory Wildlife Biologist Duty station: Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuge Complex Female Conservation Hero or Mentor: Dr. Janice Edgerly-Rooks, ecologist, and professor at Santa Clara University where I was an undergraduate. Janice is a wonderful scientist and made sure we all also had fun studying ecology. Where did you go to school or military branch: Santa Clara University, Santa Clara California (B.S.) and Oregon State University, Corvallis Oregon (M.S.) What did you study? Psychology/Biology minor (B.S.) and Wildlife Science (M.S.). How did you get interested in conservation? I think it was reading “The Lorax” by Dr. Suess as a child, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” That combined with growing up in Oregon, surrounded by so much accessible, beautiful public lands! My parents always took us camping, hiking, fishing and beach combing. It became second nature to appreciate the natural world, to find peace, comfort and solace in being in nature. I remember crying as a child when seeing a clear-cut logging operation! What’s your favorite species and why? The Western burrowing owl is a small, tough, plucky little creature, sort of like me! It nests in underground burrows created by other animals, which is unique for North American owl species. It is a species that manages to be comical and inquisitive, yet also wise and thoughtful, which reminds me not to be too serious all of the time! |
