English: Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan (Feb. 4, 2003) -- A tribute to U.S. Navy Commodore Perry and his famous "Black Ship" is carved out of snow for the 54th Annual Sapporo International Snow Festival. Perry is famous throughout Japan for being the first American to officially open up the country of Japan to trade and relations with the United States during the 19th Century. An average of 2 million visitors travel to the main island's Prefecture capital to see the artistry of snow and ice carved by teams from several countries, which includes teams from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) and U.S. Sailors from Naval Air Facility (NAF) Misawa.
