English: Quantico, Va. (Sept. 7, 2005) - The Ultra Armored Patrol Vehicle is a research project funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), at the Georgia Technology Research Institute. The project’s goal is to develop a prototype vehicle that demonstrates improved ballistic and mine protection technologies. An innovative survivable crew capsule, which utilizes a new combination of armor materials, is mounted on a commercial truck chassis. Faceted crew capsule geometries are being used to provide better deflection of pressure waves from blasts when compared to current configurations. The Ultra is slightly larger than the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and is diesel powered. U.S. Navy photo by Mr. John F. Williams (RELEASED) |
