English: GROTON, Conn. (April 4, 2007) – Chief Electrician’s Mate Zach Montello, left, and Chief Electrician’s Mate Stephen Brooke rig shore cables to NR-1 upon its return to Naval Submarine Base New London. NR-1 conducted a visual and acoustic survey of the Flower Garden Banks in the Gulf of Mexico. The expedition was a joint effort with Dr. Robert D. Ballard and the Institute for Exploration. NR-1, the world's smallest nuclear submarine was built in 1969 and has been continually upgraded to provide outstanding capabilities for military surveillance and marine research at mid-ocean depths of 3,000 feet.
