English: YORKTOWN, Va. (Aug. 26, 2009) Col. Barton S. Sloat, left, commanding officer of Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, presents Staff Sgt. Brandon Mikalik with the Navy and Marine Corps Medal during a ceremony at 2nd Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST) Company at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Mikalik helped rescue two people from a burning vehicle after an automobile accident in October 2008 outside his apartment in Newport News. The Navy and Marine Corps Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Marine Corps, distinguishes himself by heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy, for acts of lifesaving, or attempted lifesaving, at the risk of one's own life.
