It was late on the second day after this con-versation that the advance-guard came in withnews that some Mexican troops were not farahead, on a road to the left. Several regimentswere at once despatched to that vicinity, includingthe command to which Ralph belonged. Lateron the troops to which Dan and Poke belongedalso came up. Inside of half an hour the Mexican sharpshootersbegan firing on our advance-guard, and soon camea steady crack-cracking of guns, followed presentlyby the roar of cannon and the shrieking of shells. Down with the greasers! came the cry. Forward, every man ! Hurrah for Uncle Sam ! And forward they went, until Ralphs companywas in the very midst of a hot fire, with bulletswhistling in every direction. One bullet passedthrough his soldier jacket and another clipped hisshoulder, and he saw a man directly in front ofhim throw up his arms and fall dead. He had toleap over the body to keep from falling himself. The onward rush lasted the best part of half anhour. The firing came by fits and starts.
