Opposition to Rous-seau took even the form of his pictures as I say, beingbought at higher prices. These fluctuations in his meansinvolved Rousseau in financial difficulties for which histemperament was of course not fitted. His was the tem-perament of a dreamer, not at all the man described bysome of his political friends as a reformer, as a personengaged in general ideas; no, he was purely and ab-solutely a painter, a dreamer, a man in love with certainthings he had seen. And his living in solitude, and in astate of opposition and intellectual struggle brought onan irregularity of habit of work, which is singular, per-haps, in the career of one of the most strenuous andsincere of artists at any time.
