Summary[edit]

Description
English: On June 27, 2019, the clouds parted over the United Kingdom and Ireland as NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board to acquire a rare cloud-free, true-color image of the pair of green islands. The United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, and Wales (all located on the island of Great Britain) and Northern Ireland. The country of Ireland spans about five-sixths of the southern part of island of Ireland.

Thanks to the moisture surrounding the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, they are often covered by cloud. In addition, air masses from the Arctic, southern and northern Europe, the Maritime, and the Gulf Stream all converge in this area, increasing the likelihood of cloud formation.

According to a 2012 study based on MODIS data, the probability of cloud-free skies on any given day over Great Britain is 21.3 percent, with a maximum probability of 33.3 percent in November and 12.9 probability in March. Overall, about 67 percent of the Earth is bathed in clouds on any given day, with just 10 percent of the ocean being completely cloud-free.
