Lady Macbe Come, gentle my lord, Sleek oer your rugged looks! (Macbeth—Act III.) MACBETH OPERA IN FOUR ACTS Text by Piave and Andrea Maffei, after Shakespeare; music by Verdi. First producedat the Pergola, Florence, March 17, 1847. This version was given in New York in 1848.The opera was revised by the composer, translated into French by Nuitter and Beaumont,and given at the Theatre Lyrique, Paris, April 21, 1865, with Ismael as Macbeth. Other opera composers who took Shakespeares work as a subject were Chelard, ParisAcademie, June 29, 1827 (text by Rouget de Lisle, writer of Marseillaise); and Taubert,1857. Beethoven also planned for an opera of Macbeth, but made only preliminary sketcheswhich are now in the Konigliche Bibliothek at Berlin. In the annals of music are to be founda Macbeth, by Andre (Berlin, 1780); and another by Reichart (Munich, 1795). Music forWilliam Davenants semi-operatic version of the tragedy was composed by Matthew Locke.This was produced by Davenants widow
