were caught every day on the steamer in largequantities. Their blood was at once microscopicallyexamined, but not in one single case was a trypanosomaidentified. And yet the inhabitants were many ofthem infected, and in a surprizing number of casesenlarged glands might be observed. On the 13th of September, we at length came to anend of this hot voyage, the thermometer every dayregistering 99° F. in the shade. (Illus. 1.) The same afternoon we reached Libenge on theBelgian bank, two days journey from Bangi. Here DrHaberer, Dr Schubotz, Schmidt, and I left the Valerie,in order to work for three weeks in the forest and neigh-bouring plains. In spite of the friendly assistance ofCommandant van der Cruyssen, we found great difficultyin obtaining bearers. With much trouble we managedto obtain fifty men, of whom twenty ran away againduring the night, thus needlessly delaying our start.This small number of carriers being naturally insuf-ficient for our baggage, we sent the rest of it on by
