res. Providence is noted for its varied manufactures, and in its nearly 2,000 establishments are represented upwards of 175 different industries. Prom-inent among these are cotton and woolen goods, jewelry, both in solid gold and silver and plated goods, silverware,—the famous Gorhamsilverware factories, among the finest factory buildings in the country, are in the Elmwood suburb,—-locomotives, boilers, electric and steamengines, machinery, files, tools, screws, sewing machines, and the most delicate micrometric instruments in the world. The city is an importantand extensive trade centre. Lines of steamships connect it with New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore, and seven lines oi railroads with theinterior.
