Perkeo = Zwerg? Nun, ganz so lapidar wie in manchen zeitgenössischen Prospekten lässt sich die Herkunft des Namens nicht erklären. Es ist vielmehr so, dass um 1720 der pfälzische Kurfürst Karl III. Philipp den kleinwüchsigen Clemens Pankert (auch Giovanni Clementi) aus Tirol mitbrachte und ihn als Hofnarr und Mundschenk anstellte. Er hatte auch die Aufsicht über das berühmte Heidelberger Große Faß. „Perkeo“ wurde er genannt, weil er auf die Frage, ob er noch ein Glas Wein trinken wollte, immer geantwortet haben soll „perché no?“ („Warum nicht?“). Nichtsdestotrotz: Die Kamera ist wirklich besonders klein und handlich, kaum größer als eine Kleinbildkamera. Sie war 1950 als Nachfolgerin der Bessa 66 gedacht. Zunächst hatte die Perkeo I keine Doppelbelichtungssperre wie die Bessa, kein Zählwerk und keine Abdeckung des Rotfensters. Das wurde erst bei dem zweiten Modell der Perkeo I (1951-1952) geändert, wo eine Doppelbelichtungssperre mit Pfeilanzeige und ein verschließbares Rotfenster eingebaut war. Die abgebildete Perkeo I gehört bereits zur dritten Generation. Produziert von 1953 bis 1957, wurde die Brennweite des Objektivs (ein Vaskar oder ein Color-Skopar) von 75 mm auf 80 mm vergrößert. An Verschlüssen gab’s eine große Auswahl: Vario bis Prontor-SV für die Vaskar-Ausführung, bis zum Synchro-Compur für die Skopar-Version. Von 1951 bis 1953 wurde die Perkeo II gebaut. Sie hatte ein Bildzählwerk wie die Bessa 66, Doppelbelichtungs- und Leerbildsperre. Der seltenen Perkeo „E“ (8000 Stück) gönnte man einen ungekuppelten Entfernungsmesser, ansonsten entsprach sie der Perkeo I (3. Modell). Produziert wurde sie von 1954 bis 1958.
