Thhis painting is a view of the garden at the hospital in Saint-Rémy, where Van Gogh often worked when his illness made it impossible for him to leave the institution's premises. The artist described this work to his friend Emile Bernard, concluding, 'You will fully understand how the combination of red ochre, green [...] and black stripes used in the outlines evoke the torment sometimes suffered by certain of my companions in adversity - the so-called 'red-black'. inv.
