Nederlands: Doopvont, Maasland, 15e eeuw.
Dopen is een eeuwenoud ritueel dat de overgang naar het leven als christen symboliseert. De christenen volgen zo het voorbeeld van Johannes de Doper. Johannes preekte aan de rivier de Jordaan. Hij riep het joodse volk op zich voor te bereiden op de komst van de Messias. Ook Jezus werd door hem gedoopt. Dit achthoekig doopvont is versierd met vier maskers. De koppen beschermen het heilige water tegen het kwaad. Een van hen kijkt de toeschouwer grijnzend aan. |
