nty by thirtyinches, carefully made for the purpose of engraving, was purchased by Sir Francis Baring forfive hundred guineas, and that the same gentleman made an agreement with Trumbull for aseries of pictures on American subjects, to be paid for at the same rate. Why such an agree-ment should have been made subject to approval by the governing powers does not plainlyappear; but Trumbull says it was, and that in consequence of the disapproval of the projectin a high quarter, the proposition was withdrawn. The Sortie was engraved byWilliam Sharpe, still considered one of the best engravers of his time, and Trumbull, notsatisfied with the copy originally made for engraving, and which had been bought by SirFrancis Baring, made another larger one, six feet by nine, which was exhibited when finished ART AND ARTISTS OF OUR TIME. 18^. in 1789, in Spring Gardens, and was much admired. It was afterward bought by the BostonAthenaeum, and is still, we believe, in the possession of that society.

The talent of Trumbull showed best in painting in oil on a small scale, and on thisaccount it is to be regretted that the scheme in which Sir Francis Baring was interested, of aseries of pictures on American subjects, to be painted of the same size as The Sortie fromGibraltar, could not have been carried out. As it is, this was never done, and the only worksby which Trumbulls skill as an artist can be known are, as we have said, the smaller works,chiefly preserved in the gallery at New Haven.
