From the margin of the magnificenttimber belt along the banks of the Missouri, to the extremewestern limits of the State, the country gradually rises in suc-cessive waves of vast grassy plains, Which roll in primevalsplendor to the very base of the Rocky Mountains. Thenatural vegetation of this region is strong and thrifty, except-ing the timber growth, which is confined to the margins ofthe streams. These in the summer are fringed with a densefoliage of green, but furnish only a limited supply of materialfor lumber and fuel. Vast stretches of upland intervene,upon which sometimes, for fifty miles in extent, not a tree isto be seen. Back from the broad bottom lands of the Upper Platte areoccasional sandy bluffs, pierced by deep ravines and water-courses, upon which the stunted red cedar has in some placesflourished extensively; but the supply is not adequate to therequirements of even a thinly populated district.

For the present, thelumber indispensable for building and fencing must necessarilycome from beyond the limits of the State; but the facilitiesfurnished by the Missouri River and the Pacific Railroad, andits constructing and projected l^ranches, will soon relieve set-tlers from any embarrassment in this respect. The readei will have already inferred that the soil of Ne-braska is remarkaljly rich and arable. Such fertility andluxuriance as we have described could only prevail wheregreat strength and depth of soil existed.
