Description CLARKS HILL, S.C. – Following up on the success of the USA National Cycling Time Trials in 2011 and 2012, bicycle racing returned to Thurmond Lake this past weekend in the form of Columbia County's Wildwood Games, which featured both mountain biking and running events. On Aug. 23, more than 60 riders braved the heat to take part in 50k and 80k races. The race started in Wildwood County Park and, using the Bartram Trail and some tracks cleared specifically for the race, covered the south end of the lake with racers going through several parks including Below Dam Georgia, West Dam, Lake Springs, and Petersburg Campground. The Aug. 24 race featured 50k, 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles, and 10k courses for more than 120 runners. The event was a dry run for the USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships, which Wildwood Park will host in 2015 and 2016. The Corps provided logistical support to the race by providing access to the trails and also helped by clearing new trail sections used specifically for the race course and a water safety booth was also provided at the start/finish line.
