Text Appearing Before Image:
ime. I went to see Mr. Thales Fielding, whowas staying at Dover, and after having partakenof a good breakfast I proceeded on board thesteamer, lying in the harbour near the old jetty, which still exists. Although delighted at beingon the sea, I was so tired that I fell asleep almostimmediately after the steamer started, and didnot wake up until three hours afterwards, just asthe steamer was entering Calais harbour. Somefriendly passengers assisted me in. securing a seat, first on the English coach to Boulogne, and after-wards on the French diligence, which reachedParis in forty-eight hours. On descending fromthe diligence I hired a porter to carry my baggageto Mr. Ostervalds, to whom I had a letter ofintroduction, but on arrival at his house I foundthat he was away from Paris; so with the helpof my written phrases I explained to the servantthat I would leave my luggage and call againthe next morning. I then retraced my steps to ENTRANCE TO THE HARBOUR, DOVER (1856)(Size 10 x 14kinches.)
Text Appearing After Image:
PARIS 11 the diligence office in order to find out whereHotel Dauphin was situated, but after trying invain to understand the words, gestures and signsas to the route, I hired a cabriolet, in which thepassenger sat beside the driver, it being the onlyvehicle on hire in the streets of Paris in thosedays. On arrival at the hotel I paid the driverby holding out a handful of silver that he mighttake his fare. Whether he cheated me I neverknew. I had only been in Paris three days whenI was asked if I could lend some money for a shorttime. I only possessed a five-pound note, whichmy father had given me; this I lent, but neversaw it again. Consequently I can truly saythat I started life in Paris penniless. The nextmorning I traced my way across Paris again toMr. Ostervalds house, and found him at home.He had arranged that I should reside with a Swissfamily, but Newton Fielding, whom I subsequentlymet, persuaded me to share his studio in Rue St.Georges, as it was more convenient for my work.I
