and took the coachto Paris, where I stayed for a week with mybrother John, and then returned to London. Inthese years a great difficulty was experienced inleaving France. It was absolutely necessary tohave a passport, and one had to attend the Bureaude Passeport, where full particulars of ones height,colour of the eyes, length of nose, etc, were care-fully noted. The passport had afterwards to bepresented at the British Embassy to be viseed bythe Ambassador, which took three days, and forwhich a charge of five francs was made. It hadalso to be countersigned and registered at the porton quitting France. One of the earliest which 1possess is quite a curiosity. The year 1845 was one of considerable momentto me, for I became engaged to one of my pupils,Miss Harriet Anne Smart, a niece of Sir GeorgeSmart, the Queens organist, and sister to HenrySmart, the organist and composer.
