Summary[edit]

Description The Willow Street Steam Generation Plant, located on Willow Street between N. Darien and N. 9th Streets in the Spring Garden neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was built in 1927 by the Philadelphia Electric Company as part of the city's steam system, which became the third largest system in the country, and which is still operating. The plant has not been operational since the 1970s, and proposals to reuse the facility have run up again the lack of floors in the building -- due to the large interior spaces needed by the boilers -- and the need for asbestos abatement; the asbestos problem also makes demolition of the building prohibitively expensive.
