ith one another in their frequentexhibitions. It matters little how it was derived, but it probably was of Polish descent, differingfrom the larger laced fowl in absence of crest, and of sickles in tail. There are two varieties. Silvers and Golds, but at the present time Silvers are by far themore popular, probably from the fact that thecontrast is greater in them, and in consequencemore catching to the eye, and also that theyare much easier to breed true to colour. Inboth varieties it is not so much the lacingthat is difficult to get, as the quality of it.We often see it a dusky, rusty colour, insteadof a good beetle black, and especially so inthe Golds. It requires much care in this caseto get a good rich ground colour, combined withthe necessary quality of glossy black, at thesame time maintaining an absolutely clear aswell as rich ground. Often the Golds run fartoo pale in ground-colour, which again is aserious fault. This can however to a certainextent be remedied by colour feeding.

SEBRIGHl^ BANTAMS. 521 Sebrights require some management to securefertility in the eggs. The evil of infertility isone which cannot be remedied quite so easilyin their case as in Pekins and Booted, since it isthe natural result of breeding from hen-featheredcocks. Still much can be done by absolute restfrom exhibition during the breeding season, andby choosing those male birds which actually dochance to come sickled, or have at least an inchor two of sickles projecting beyond the tailproper. There is nearly always an abundanceof eggs from a well kept and housed pen ofSebrights, so this helps the breeder. But thelittle chicks are delicate, especially during thefirst few weeks of their lives, and require quiteprofessional care to rear them. They shouldhave dry, very dry sheltered runs, and beabsolutely cut off from cold east winds andbeating rain, with access to as much green foodas possible. Some breeders from long experi-ence are very successful. Their percentage ofclear eggs is small
