Description

The area of Zeyrek is located in Fatih on the fourth hill of İstanbul that leads from Atatürk Boulevard and Haliç. The Pantocrator Monastery at the center of this site is one of many major religious buildings in the neighbourhood that date back to the Byzantine period. In 1453 Muhammed the Conqueror converted the Pantocrator Church into the Molla Zeyrek Mosque. When it was renovated in the 18th century, baroque details were added to the mosque according to the architectural tendencies of the period. The last renovation was made in 1966, by the Pious Foundations. The mosque and the wooden 19th century houses that surround it are marked as a World Heritage Area under the protection of UNESCO. Today, Zeyrek is home to major monumental buildings from the Byzantine, Ottoman, as well as the Republican periods, including the Zeyrek Social Insurance Institution, designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem, and the İstanbul Drapery Bazaar (İMÇ), designed by Doğan Tekeli, Sami Sisa and Metin Hepgüler.

Fatih ilçesine bağlı olan Zeyrek semti, İstanbul’un dördüncü tepesi ve eteklerinde yer alır. Semt, Atatürk Bulvarı ve Haliç’ten başlayıp yükselen yamaçta, Bizans döneminden itibaren yapılmış çeşitli teraslamalar ve setlerin üstüne kuruludur. Bizans, Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet dönemi yapılarına ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Adını, Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in Pantokrator Manastırı Kilisesi’nden dönüştürdüğü Molla Zeyrek Camii’nin baş müderrisi Zeyrek Mehmet Efendi’den alır. Bölgede Sedad Hakkı Eldem’in tasarladığı Zeyrek Sosyal Sigortalar Kurumu binası ile Doğan Tekeli-Sami Sisa-Metin Hepgüler ortaklığında tasarlanan İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı (İMÇ), Cumhuriyet döneminin önemli miraslarındandır.
