Česky: Herold je profesionální autorita – vykladač a znalec užívání erbů. Jako autorita rozhodoval i v genealogických záležitostech šlechtických rodů. Heroldi vytvořili blason – popis znaku pomocí speciálního heraldického názvosloví.

Dansk: En herold var oprindelig en budbringer udsendt af en konge eller adelig for at viderebringe en meddelelse eller proklamation. Herolderne bar ofte en kåbe med deres herres våben.

English: An officer of arms is a person appointed by a sovereign or state with authority to control and initiate armorial matters, to arrange and participate in ceremonies of state, and/or to conserve and interpret heraldic and genealogical records.

Español: Un heraldo era el oficial encargado de hacer ciertas publicaciones relacionadas con los caballeros de armas. Desempeñaban funciones específicas en las ceremonias públicas. Llevaban un traje especial y en cada manga traían estampado el nombre de su provincia o comarca.

Русский: Геро́льд глашатай, вестник, церемониймейстер при дворах королей, крупных феодалов; распорядитель на торжествах, рыцарских турнирах. Герольд был также судьёй на турнире (страж турнира): подавал знак к началу турнира, мог остановить слишком ожесточённый бой. Герольд ведал составлением гербов и родословий.
