This page contains a gallery of the imperial portraits in codex Mutinensis graecus 122, a 15th-century codex, mainly consisting of a copy of the 12th-century history of Joannes Zonaras, but with the addition of portraits of nearly every Roman emperor,[a] from Augustus in 27 BC to Constantine XI Palaiologos in 1453. The gallery below showcases the complete set of 164 portraits featured in the codex, following the order in which they appear therein (for the most part in chronological order). Some emperors have multiple portraits.

The portraits of ancient rulers are considered imaginary, but portraits from Heraclius (№ 87) onwards are more reliable and are in most cases probably based on surviving contemporary depictions.

Sequence of portraits[edit]

Notes[edit]

  1. A handful of rulers, such as some of the emperors during the Crisis of the Third Century, the last few emperors of the Western Roman Empire and Irene of Athens, do not have portraits in the codex.
  2. Constantine II, Constans and Constantius II are all mentioned in the corresponding text, but there is only one accompanying portrait, presumably depicting the longest-reigning of the three brothers (and the only one to possess Constantinople).
