User:Mark Marathon deleted all of the images in this gallery. I restored some of them (the ones which show examples of the species). Mark deleted the images again. From his edit comment, it seems to be because the gallery is incomplete (didn't show all of the species).

I believe that this gallery should show images of species in the genus Eucalyptus, for two reasons:

  1. To quote Commons:Galleries: "Galleries without media are not galleries at all. They are considered out of the project scope and meet the criteria for speedy deletion."
  2. There is no Commons requirement that genus galleries be complete --- many rare species are unphotographed, and we still have many genus galleries. Mark seems to believes that a gallery showing a partial list is misleading. I disagree --- the taxonavigation shows the complete list of species, and each photograph is labeled with its species. It's clear to readers that the list is incomplete.

Notifying editors of the gallery to widen the discussion: @Gderrin, Balablitz, Patche99z, Meno25, and Tano4595: , @Sarefo, Melburnian, Ayacop, MPF, and Fir0002:

Later --- I may have misinterpreted Mark's objections. Was it that the list was incomplete, or that only a small fraction of the species were shown? We could expand the gallery to show 200+ species. It would still be incomplete, but show the diversity of the genus. — hike395 (talk) 16:10, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Later --- it occurs to me that most people visiting this page are laymen, not botanists. "Eucalyptus" is both the scientific name for the genus and the common name. I think we would best serve our readers by showing high-quality pictures from the genus. As a second priority, we could show many species-labeled thumbnails.
I don't want to do a huge amount of work on the gallery, just to have it reverted. I'll start by gathering some high-quality images for laymen. — hike395 (talk) 17:15, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
