On 13 Jan 2022, NOAA's GOES West satellite captured another explosive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano, located in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga. In the above visible imagery from the satellite, we can see the extent of the ash plume as well as multiple rippling gravity waves emanating outward. This type of imagery from the "red" visible band has the finest spatial resolution of all the bands on the satellite's Advanced Baseline Imager, making it ideal to identify small-scale features.
