The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest lake in the world. When the Soviet Union diverted two major rivers to irrigate farmland in the 1960s, the inland sea was cut off from its source. Since then, the Aral Sea has been slowly disappearing. These satellite images show how the Aral Sea has changed in recent decades.
