English: The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a service within the department of Homeland Security involved in maritime law enforcement, mariner assistance, search and rescue, in wartime it becomes a branch of the United States armed forces with a role in national defense.

The Coast Guard was formed by merging the Revenue Cutter Service and Life Saving Service in 1915, the Light House Service was absorbed in 1939. (See History of the United States Coast Guard.)
