Ferenghi is a nickname I picked up whilst gaming, although it is based on the term for a tourist on the Old Silk Route.
An obvious traveller, so all the bartering starts at double the normal starting price. Buyer thinks item is a bargain, seller gets high price. Tourist.
Marco Polo is the most famous and possibly the first Ferenghi, paying marked up prices all the way to Cathay and back.
Star Trek changed the term by deleting the h and making their race the opposite of the Silk Route terminology.
