Modern Manufacturing[edit]

Assembly System Design

I have made a Precedence Table, Precedence Diagram and Weighted Table for the motor assembly.

The Table splits the assembly into 4 sections labeled A-D. These sections must be followed in order. Each section has a number of sub sections labeled from I-V. These sub section are independent of each other and can be performed in any order as long as the sequence in each sub section is followed as numbered.

For example:

In "Section C", one can perform "II" before "I". The steps of "II" must be completed in the following order: 1,2,3.

The Diagram uses the procedures on page 6 of the handout labeled 1 - 20 as we did in the tutorial. The red number at the top right of the process represents the time in seconds for the process to be completed. The green number at the bottom right represents the weight. I am not 100% sure with this diagram so please check it yourself and let me know if there is something wrong with it.

The weighted table should be viewed with the Precedence Diagram. The cycle time is at 400 seconds. Our target is around 250 seconds, so either I have made a mistake or we need to use tools to reduce the time. I have grouped the work into different colours. Each colour represents a cell/workstation that needs to be executed in the correct order (red, yellow then green). Again, since our cycle time is so high we need to change this. Just regard the precedence diagram and weighted table a starting point.

If you want to change/comment/improve/add/ask anything, follow these steps to leave a comment:

  1. Go to the top of the page. There you will see tabs labeled:
  • user page
  • discussion
  • edit
  • history...etc
  1. Click on the "discussion" tab, this should take you to a new page
  2. Now there should be a new tab that is labeled "+comment". Click on this tab
  3. Type you comment in the text field below. If you wish you can add a heading/subject
  4. After you are finished, click the "save page" button to save the comment. If you do not click "save page" your comment will not be posted. I will be notified next time I log on.
