Towards the end of the war the Germans salvaged 21 cm howitzers from the forts of Liège, Namur and Antwerp. They placed them on simple box trail carriages and issued them to heavy artillery battalions. The combination of modern projectiles and smokeless powder increased their range from 6.9 km to 9.1 km.
