The Cenotaph in Esplanade Park, Connaught Drive, Singapore, was designed by Denis Santry of Swan and Maclaren and constructed between 1920 and 1922. Singapore's first military memorial, its foundation stone was laid on 15 November 1920 by the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Laurence Guillemard. The completed structure was unveiled by Edward, the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and the Duke of Windsor after his abdication), in March 1922.
Initially, the monument bore the names of 124 men from the Colony of Singapore who died during World War I on bronze tablets. There was also a bronze medallion by Swiss sculptor R. Wenings in the form of a laurel wreath of victory enclosing a crown which represented the Colony, and below it the inscription "Our glorious dead". Following World War II, a dedication was added on the side of the monument facing away from Connaught Drive to commemorate soldiers who fought and perished in that conflict.
The Cenotaph was gazetted as a national monument together with the Lim Bo Seng Memorial and Tan Kim Seng Fountain on 28 December 2010.
