Raleigh, was born in Gloucester, England, and when he was ten years old ran away to sea joining his uncle who commanded a British naval vessel. For thirty years he was a merchant seaman, then he settled in Massachusetts. He started as a house and sign painter, then progressed to a self-taught maritime and marine artist. He created nearly eleven hundred paintings including six hundred images of whaling vessels.
