w:Thomas Chaucer, son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, having married Matilda (or Maud) Burghersh, second daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Burghersh, appears to have adopted a differenced version of the arms of Burghersh (Gules, a lion rampant double queued or), with alteration to the field, in lieu of his paternal arms of Per pale argent and gules, a bend counterchanged, as used by his father the poet.
