The Denniston Plateau (technically the Denniston-Stockton plateau) on the West Coast of New Zealand is 18 km long and 3–4 km wide, ranging from 600–800 m above sea level. It has extensive coal reserves, and contains the former mining towns of Denniston and Millerton and the open-cast Stockton coal mine. Its thin acidic soil and high rainfall has given rise to a unique and diverse ecosystem of low-growing plants; several species of insect, snail, and plant are found only on the plateau, and are threatened by proposed new mines.
