Brake tenders, ballasted wagons, usually converted from old passenger coaches, that were used to provide additional braking effort to the early days of lightweight diesel locomotives. They were needed in the early 1960s as the new diesels were lighter weight than the previous steam locomotives and could not provide the same braking force. They went out of service when all freight became vacuum fitted throughout.
