English: The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was designated A4D with the U.S. Navy (and with it U.S. Marine Corps) until 18 September 1962 when, with the introduction of the Tri-Service aircraft designation system, all Skyhawks still in service were redesignated A-4. The designation A-4D was not used to avoid confusion with the earlier A4D designation. The Skyhawk had been designed and produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company which merged with the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation on 28 April 1967 to form McDonnell Douglas.
