The F & W Grand-Silver 5 & 10 store opened in Allentown on October 30th 1915 on the north-east corner of Ninth and Hamilton Streets (841 Hamilton Street). The store was an early chain discount store started by Adolph Finkelstein in 1899 in New York City. The chain had previously opened stores in Reading and Philadelphia. In 1922, the store relocated to 633-635 Hamilton Street where it operated in the former Hinterleitner Department Store building until 1931. It's former location was absorbed into the Hess Brothers Department Store.

It then returned to the 800 block of Hamilton Street, opening in the former Hersh Hardware store at 829-833 Hamilton, adjacent to the Hess Brothers. At the time of the move, the chain was taken over by the H. L. Green Pension Holding Company, however it remained under it's previous name.

In 1958, the store was renovated and at the same time renamed as the H. L. Green company, ending it's former history with F & W Grand.
