Freeman's Dairy was founded in 1927 by Robert E. Freeman. Born in Lehighton, he moved to Allentown with his parents at age 10 and had his first milk route for the Allentown Dairy in 1917. The slogan of Freeman's was "Best By Test". Freeman's was also known as the "Dairy in the Park" because of its specially designed walks and well-tended rose garden

Freeman was something of a horse fancier and in 1933 was pictured in The Morning Call with draft horses he had purchased in Chicago for the dairy. At its height in 1953, Freeman's received milk from 300 farms, produced 40,000 quarts a day and employed 110. Robert Freeman, who was also known as "Buck," died in 1959.

During the 1960s, Freemans branched off into numerous food products, not all being dairy products. It ended active advertising in 1968. It was the last dairy in Allentown to offer home delivery, however it cut back delivery days to one or two days a week in 1974 due to the increased costs of fuel due to the 1973 energy crisis. In October 1986, Johanna Farms Inc. of Flemington, N.J., acquired the label and distribution rights to Freeman's Dairy and closed the processing plant at 13th and Green Street, although home delivery of milk and other Freeman products continued. The dairy facility was moved to Skukill Haven and the dairy products were shipped to East Allentown at 728/742 East Highland Street for distribution. The last Freeman's Dairy delivery trucks disappeared in the mid-1990s without fanfare. In 1998 the Freeman name ended when the facility was merged with Lehigh Valley Dairies.
