The Jewell County Jail is a two-story, historical stone building in Mankato, Kansas. Built c. 1899-1900, it stands on the corner of Madison and Center Streets.

The jail is constructed of two different local limestone beds, thicker Fencepost limestone (brown-orange streak) and another half-height durable limestone set in alternating, pitched-face courses. In addition to these alternating courses, two string courses of Shiner-laid Fencepost limestone (identifiable by the exposed Inoceramus shells) are set at the lintel levels of the windows.

The same stonework design is used in the old Burr Oak School in Burr Oak, Kansas.

The NRHP Registration Form (Continuation Sheet) describes the stone type as "local post-rock" and "Randall limestone", a stone that "is quarried from the top layer of the local post rock.[1]

Randall limestone is not a formal name. Randall is a village at the outcrop of the Fencepost limestone on the Buffalo Creek, where a number of old Fencepost quarries are found.[2]

About 5 feet above the Fencepost limestone, lies another limestone bed that is just as durable but only half as thin. As Fencepost limestone is quarried, an equal area of this thinner limestone (marker bed F-2 of the Fairport Chalk[3]) must quarried off first. It is noted, that besides the half-height "Randall" limestone seen in the Jail and Burr Oak School, a block of buildings on Main Street in Randall have walls of half-height limestone from this bed.
