In the face of the cliffs on the north side of the Yeşilırmak river at Amasya (ancient Amaseia) are five large rock-cut tombs. On the basis of a description by the ancient geographer Strabo, these have traditionally been identified as the tombs of the first five rulers of the Hellenistic kingdom of Pontus (Mithridates I, Ariobarzanes, Mithridates II, Mithridates III, and Pharnaces I), although there is no evidence to confirm the association of any individual tomb with a specific ruler. The tombs are in two groups: an eastern group, consisting of tombs A, B, and C, and a western group, consisting of tombs D and E (see the plan by Edmond Guillaume for the lettering and the locations of the tombs). There are other similar but smaller tombs nearby, including the so-called "Mirror Cave" further east on the road to Ziyaret.
