The Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast was established in 1876 as the Wesleyan High School of the Methodist Church, originally for the education of teachers. In 1891 the name of the school was changed to Wesleyan Collegiate School and in the July 1905, this school was unified with the shortly before founded Mfantsipim High School of the Fante Public Schools Limited in Cape Coast to the Mfantsipim School as high school under the supervision of the Methodist Church.
