English: Parnitha at its most fundamental level of meaning is the mountain range adjoining the city of Athens on the north between it and the Euboean Gulf. The exact meaning is somewhat amorphous depending on popular tradition and geologic or ecologic definition. In 1961 the definition became precise with the creation of Parnitha National Park (Ethniko Drymos Parnethas), which had borders defined by the government. In 1995 the same area was again defined, this time as a protected area, which after 2000 was Natura 2000 ID GR3000001, Oros Parnitha, keeping the same area and managed by the same agency. Since then the type of protection and inventory of species has been updated regularly.
