Zweihundert deutsche Männer (two hundred German men, “man” in sense of “male person”) is the short title for a work, edited by Ludwig Bechstein and published in several editions with slightly different titles. 200 men, considered important for German history and already dead, have been described with a portrait and short biography. The titulation as German has been interpreted very broadly: Also Austrians and Swiss are included.

  • 1st edition: “Zweihundert deutsche Männer in Bildnissen und Lebensbeschreibungen” (Two hundred German men in portraits and biographies), Leipzig 1854, compare Zweihundert deutsche Männer in Bildnissen und Lebensbeschreibungen (Visual Library). Apparently it has originally been planned to portray 400 men, see edition form 1854 on Google Books (“Vierhundert” stands for “four hundred”). Alphabetic sorting by surnames.
  • 2nd edition: “Zweihundert Bildnisse und Lebensbeschreibungen berühmter deutscher Männer” (Two hundred portraits and biographies of illustrious German men), Leipzig 1857, compare title page (Google Books), the short title can be read some pages earlier. Alphabetic sorting by surnames, die biographies have been heavily trimmed, and some persons are newly integrated and for this some other people have been removed without any mention.
  • 3rd edition: “Zweihundert Bildnisse und Lebensabrisse berühmter deutscher Männer” (Two hundred portraits and short biographies of illustrious German men), Leipzig 1870, compare title page (Google Books; again, the short title comes a bit earlier). A foreword points to changes: Again, some between the editions deceased persons have been newly integrated, while some other people have been removed, and as main difference the sorting was in chronological order.

In all three editions there was no indication, who had been the creator of the images. In the Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur (only available in German) for some of them Emil Eugen Sachse is specified as author, for others Hugo Bürkner, and for some it is stated as unclear. In some cases Sachse has added his monogram, a convoluted ES.

In 1890 a new edition was published with the title “Dreihundert Bildnisse und Lebensabrisse berühmter deutscher Männer” (Three hundred portraits and biographies of illustrious German men), where the first time as one of the editors the illustrator Hugo Bürkner was mentioned. Whether this is valid for all images, is unclear: There is no known fully available on-line resource. See also the entry in WorldCat.
