English: Potsdam Day (German: "Tag von Potsdam") was a celebration held in Nazi Germany on 21 March 1933 for the inauguration of a newly elected Reichstag, the German legislature. Because the Reichstag Building had been burned down, the events took place in the Garrison Church and the Kroll Opera House in Potsdam, a suburb of Berlin. They were orchestrated by Josef Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda chief, and were intended to symbolically show continuity between Imperial Germany and Nazi Germany. Famously, Chancellor Adolf Hitler, barely three months in office and dressed in a civilian suit, bowed his head deeply when he shook hands with President Field Marshall Paul von Hindenburg, dressed in full military regalia.
